Trust - the missing link and its effect on the ad industry

I must admit I am feeling quite disillusioned with the state of affairs, and by ‘affairs’ I mean the lack of trust and integrity that is currently pervading the marketing and advertising landscape. I’ve been thinking a lot about where this industry is headed and I believe we need to redefine how we approach branding and relationship-building with clients in order to restore trust.

Want to make more money with your Brand? Box Smart

One of the best films that I have ever seen is “Million Dollar Baby” by Clint Eastwood. In fact I love a good boxing film, from “The Fighter” to all the Rocky’s (I own a few Rocky DVD’s) to “Cinderella Man”. I love the concept of a fighter and a boxer. To me, the figure of the Boxer is one of the most heroic and iconic figures of all time.

The death of the retainer

Retainer has become an ugly word… say the word “retainer” in a client meeting and you feel the temperature drop, eyes are averted and you know you just said something wrong. Once retainers were the only ways that agencies operated; now it seems that fewer and fewer clients are willing to commit themselves to one agency for an extended period of time.

5 Ways to Save our Industry from Itself

We who are about to die… salute you.”

I remember watching a movie about Gladiators a while ago. During one of the cliffhanger scenes in the movie, the following statement is uttered by the Gladiators as they greet the great Caesar before their big epic battle: “We who are about to die, salute you”. If I look at the advertising and brand building industry today, it resembles this scene. The industry is in trouble, but we can only make it work for everyone if we work together to change not only the perceptions about the industry, but also how we make money and the type of work that we deliver.

Can agencies create fresh, innovative work that also improves client’s bottom line?

I hate the word “advertising”. Whenever I am at a social event and someone asks what I do, I mumble something about working in an advertising agency and hope I don’t get the usual barrage of judging looks and comments about working for an evil team of brainwashers.

In a rugby-mad country like South Africa, admitting you’re a golfer can be a bold act of rebellion. Arctic Circle’s new print ad for Expo18 plays on this human truth, encouraging all golfers to embrace their ardent love for the game.
